Supporter Spotlight: Nick Wilmhoff
A Chance Meeting in the West End
Eight years ago, Nick Wilmhoff and his business partner, James “JB” Kennedy, founded their print shop – Curative – in Cincinnati’s West End. One of their very first clients was the former Chatfield College.
“It meant a lot to me that Chatfield trusted us with their printing,” Nick recalled. “We were just starting out, and their support gave us a strong foundation.”
When the college closed and construction of TQL Stadium transformed the neighborhood, Curative relocated to nearby Queensgate. But Nick’s connection to Chatfield didn’t end there. He followed the launch of The Chatfield Edge – the college’s evolving legacy – and felt compelled to support its mission.
A Personal Connection to the Mission
Nick’s motivation is rooted in his own educational journey. Though he grew up with many opportunities, his first attempt at college ended in failure – flunking out of the University of Kentucky’s business school. Given a second chance and strong encouragement from his parents, he reapplied, stuck with it, and eventually earned his degree.
“I had support,” Nick said. “Not everyone does. That’s why The Chatfield Edge matters.”
He sees the program as a guidepost for students navigating life without clear direction, mentors, or support systems.
“I see The Chatfield Edge giving individuals the opportunity to build a better life,” he shared. “Sometimes people just need someone to believe in them or show them what’s possible.”
A Path Toward Success
Nick’s own path was anything but straightforward. He began stocking shelves in his family’s hardware store, where the seeds of entrepreneurship were first planted. Later, after a stint in dental sales, he reconnected with JB, a middle school friend. The two decided to purchase a print shop—despite Nick knowing little about the industry.
“We started small—business cards, flyers, postcards,” he said. “But when the pandemic hit in 2020, we saw it as a chance to pivot and grow.”
Today, Curative Creative is a thriving business offering large-scale graphics, promotional items, decals, mailing services, and more. Their five-person team continues to evolve alongside a rapidly changing print industry. Nick recognizes how far he’s come—and how vital encouragement and opportunity were in that journey.
“I think confidence is half the battle for people pursuing education,” he reflected. “The Chatfield Edge helps students believe in something bigger for themselves—even when no one else has.”
Growing into the Future
Looking ahead, Nick hopes to deepen his involvement with The Chatfield Edge, particularly by engaging students who may be curious about the exciting future of print technology.
“With innovations like 3D printing and new materials, our industry is only growing,” he said. “It would be incredible to support an apprenticeship program for Chatfield scholars—where they could learn a trade and gain confidence, curiosity, and commitment. The same things others once nurtured in me.”
The Chatfield Edge is growing and welcomes support from individuals like Nick, community organizations, and financial partners to help us provide guidance, mentoring, and scholarships to first generation, underserved, and non-traditional students. Together we can empower students enrolled in college, trade school, and certificate programs to achieve their life goals through education.
