Big Tax Changes Ahead – Make Your Charitable Gifts Count Before December 31, 2025

If you’re planning to give to The Chatfield Edge or your other favorite nonprofit this year, here’s something important to know: 2026 brings big changes to how charitable donations affect your taxes. That means 2025 is a smart time to give—especially if you want to get the most out of your generosity.

Coming next year, tax changes may impact your giving. Updates will include a new giving threshold, deductibility of cash donations only up to 60% of your income, a cap on deductions for high earners and others. Please consult your own financial or tax advisor to learn more about how these changes might impact your unique circumstances and philanthropic goals.

However, you may want to consider these options before December 31 to get the most out of your charitable giving this year:

  • Donate appreciated stock: If your investments have grown, donating them directly can help you avoid capital gains tax, and you’ll still get a full deduction.
  • Make a QCD (if eligible): If you’re over 70½ and have an IRA, you can direct a QCD (Qualified Charitable Distribution) to your charities of choice like The Chatfield Edge. This fulfills your RMD and avoids recognizing additional income.
  • Use a donor-advised fund: These accounts let you give now, get the tax break, and decide later which charities to support. Learn more about Donor Advised Funds.
  • Bunch your donations: Combine multiple years of giving into one big gift this year to beat the new threshold. Learn how bunching works.
