A Woman’s Movement: Cincinnati’s 19th Century Art Carved Furniture

Join Amy Dehan, Curator of Decorative Arts and Design at the Cincinnati Art Museum, as we explore the Ursuline Sisters’ wood carvings on Friday, August 1 at 2:00 pm at the Ursuline Archives, 20860 Route 251, St. Martin, OH 45118. This is the former Chatfield College Library. Sponsored by the Ursuline Alumni Association, the event is free, but donations are gratefully accepted.

The wood carvings in the historic Sacred Heart Chapel and Ursuline Archives in Brown County can be traced back to the Cincinnati Art Carved Furniture Movement of the late 1800’s. Benn Pittman, a noted 19th century wood carver at the University of Cincinnati School of Design, taught the Ursuline Sisters how to use native cherry and oak from the convent grounds to create intricately carved items.
