We Asked the AI Bots: “Are You Taking My Job”

To get to the bottom of this, we decided to go straight to the source. We interviewed two of the most popular AI tools, Gemini and ChatGPT.

When asked point-blank if it was out to steal our jobs, Gemini gave us a surprisingly funny answer: 

“Short answer? No. I don’t have a resume, I don’t get paid, and frankly, I have zero interest in handling your office politics or taking on your morning commute.” 

ChatGPT agreed, explaining the goal isn’t to compete with people, but to help us learn faster, solve problems, and be more productive. Gemini went on to say that it believes the most accurate phrase going around right now is that AI won’t take your job, but a professional effectively using AI might.

We also asked the bots what career they would pick if they were graduating today or looking to make a job change. Gemini immediately chose a licensed electrician specializing in renewable energy and smart systems. ChatGPT suggested careers like registered nurses, HVAC technicians, cybersecurity analysts, and dental hygienists.

Notice a pattern? AI loves jobs that need hands-on skills, human care, and real-life problem-solving. 

Automated vs. Augmented: What’s the Difference? 

To understand what jobs are safe, it helps to understand two important terms: automated and augmented. 

• Automated means a computer program does a task completely on its own. For example, a recent article in The Guardian highlighted that administrative healthcare roles, where staff work with set forms, patient records, or standard queries, are most vulnerable to automation. 
• Augmented means AI acts as a helpful assistant. Research from the Boston Consulting Group (BCG) Institute and the World Economic Forum (Future of Jobs Report 2025) shows that AI will reshape more jobs than it replaces. Instead of erasing careers, AI tools will handle routine paperwork so humans can focus on high-level decision-making and personal relationships. 

A Boom in Skilled Trades 

Because physical, hands-on work cannot be downloaded or completed by an algorithm, skilled trades are booming today. 

Survey data from blue-collar business software provider Jobber uncovered some interesting findings after talking to more than 2,000 Gen Z Americans and parents of Gen Alpha: 

• 76% of Gen Z Americans say it is important to choose a career that is difficult to automate
• 38% say AI tools make a career in the trades more appealing
• 68% of parents of Gen Alpha say AI has made them rethink the long-term stability of white-collar careers
• 52% of parents believe the skilled trades offer a better ROI than a college degree

Students are jumping on board. Data from the National Student Clearinghouse Research Center showed that the number of students attending two-year vocational schools grew 11.7% in 2025 (the third straight year of growth), while total enrollment in four-year undergraduate schools grew 3.5%. Specific trades that saw massive surges:

• HVAC students up 29%
• Mechanics up 25%
• Construction management up 23%
