The Chatfield Edge Secures $15,000 Duke Energy Foundation Grant to Empower First-Generation and Non-Traditional Students
LOVELAND, OH — May 6, 2026 — For many first-generation and non-traditional students, the path to a post-high school degree or certification isn’t blocked by a lack of talent or ambition, but by the “hidden” costs of life. Today, The Chatfield Edge announced another step forward in clearing that path, receiving a $15,000 grant from The Duke Energy Foundation.
The funding is for its Learning to Live program – a comprehensive initiative designed to provide “wraparound support” that goes beyond the classroom. While traditional scholarships cover tuition, this grant targets urgent non-academic expenses that often force students to drop out, such as food insecurity, car repairs, and childcare.
Research consistently shows that for non-traditional students, a single flat tire or a missed week of childcare can be the difference between a college degree and a permanent stop.
The $15,000 grant will provide direct assistance for:
- Basic Needs: Groceries and emergency food support.
- Transportation: Car repairs, gas cards, and public transit assistance.
- Family Support: Help with rising childcare costs.
- Technology & Tools: Laptops, reliable internet access, and required textbooks.
“Success for this program is measured by more than just grades,” says Robert Elmore, CEO of The Chatfield Edge. “It’s measured by persistence. We want to see our scholars stay enrolled, finish their certifications, and achieve the economic mobility that can change the trajectory of their lives and their families.”
The Chatfield Edge expects this funding to directly result in higher retention rates and a stronger pipeline of skilled graduates entering the local workforce. By intervening at critical moments, the program ensures that a temporary setback doesn’t become a permanent barrier to success.
